Crain’s talks about Senior PGA tournament at Harbor Shores

A new Futures Tour women’s professional tournament in the Upper Peninsula — the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass, near Escanaba — debuts this June, reports Crain’s Business Magazine.

But when it comes to rebounding golf tourney for the state the real prizes come in 2012: two Champions Tour majors featuring professional male golfers age 50 and older and, possibly, a return of the PGA Tour to metro Detroit. It’s the first time the U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship will be played in the same state.

Excerpt:

The Senior PGA, to be played May 24-27, 2012, at the Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, and the U.S. Senior Open, to be held July 12-15 at Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion, will be separated by nearly 170 miles and seven weeks’ time. The tournaments will bring Champions Tour stars Tom Watson, Fred Couples and Bernhard Langer to Michigan.

“I think we’ll have a little bit of competition, but that will be good for everybody. It will make us work harder,” said Jeff Hintz, tournament director for the Senior PGA Championship.
