“One of the many things we’ve learned from other communities like this is the need to provide information, allay concerns, and create strong partnerships. There are many misperceptions about safety, security, and how the site will fit with the surrounding neighborhood. We want to address those issues.”
Kalamazoo Housing Advocates strives to provide one-on-one supportive services, where instead of just offices and forms, a person in crisis can call on someone to help navigate the steps toward a more stable environment. And love is built into the organization.

Kalamazoo's First Presbyterian Church borders Bronson Park and its weekly Red Door Dinners provide homecooked meals and hospitality for the unhoused and others in need. “Our congregation seeks to live faith as a sanctuary in the city, with the city, for the city, and others far beyond." Zone 32 is the name of the new residential and commercial complex owned by Bogan Developments Pitcher Street. Taking its name from the number Jamauri Bogan wore on the football field at the complex, the building began welcoming residents in December.

The SHARE Center of Battle Creek feeds 100 people a day and offers a variety of free services through its drop-in center. But some people still don't know it exists. Enter Friends of the SHARE Center who are raising money and spreading the word.
St. Thomas' Laundry Love is focused on those who are “struggling to make ends meet,” says Deacon Trish Harris. “There are people who have asked me, ‘How do you know if I meet the qualifications?’ We have no qualifications. We want them to know that we see you as an important person and we’re coming to you with love."
Jill Anderson of Battle Creek wondered what it takes to give a kidney when a Portage woman she had just met shared that her husband was in desperate need. Now she knows. “We are born with four times the kidney power that we need to survive," says Anderson. "By giving away half of that, you can save another life and you’ve still got plenty of kidney function.”
