New path planned along Paw Paw river’s south bank

Watervliet is seeking state funding for development of 7,300 feet of public trails along the south bank of the Paw Paw river.

The Herald-Palladium reports city Commissions recently voted to seek a $225,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant to fund three-fourths of the $300,000 project. For the required match, the city would use general fund reserves of $75,000 if the grant is approved.

Excerpt:

Consultant Cindy LaGrow said earlier the grant program is for park property acquisition, park improvements or development of a community trail system. She recommended the grant be sought for the trail system, saying it would score higher than the other purposes.

The reason the state scores such projects higher than those related to local park development is the trail system could be linked to a larger trail network, so there is a potential regional aspect, LaGrow said.
