Young people paint mural to brighten downtown Batle Creek

A half-dozen students are painting a 4,000-square-foot mural facing State Street parking lot in downtown Battle Creek.

The estimated $50,000 project is a joint effort by Team Active Cycling and Fitness, Jack Pearl’s Team Sports, Professional and Personal Wellness, The Fitness Loft, the Battle Creek Community Foundation and the Downtown Partnership, a division of Battle Creek Unlimited, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer.

The mural dedicated to fitness will replace and expand on one painted 17 years ago on the bicycle shop.

Excerpt:

“This is not an advertisement for certain businesses,” Szenda Wilson said. “But it will improve the look for the area and will improve long standing and dedicated businesses. They choose to be here and that deserves to be recognized and celebrated.”

The mural, which still is evolving, features a bike rider, as well as baseball and volleyball players on a backdrop including the Linear Park and Battle Creek River. Parts of it will tower 48 feet over the parking lot.
