Trail upkeep funds could be in jeopardy

Hikers and cyclists will be able to ride the Kal-Haven Trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven this year without paying a penny for the privilege, reports MLive.com.

That’s great news for cash-strapped folks looking for fun this season, and the state believes funding trail upkeep through a driver’s check-off system will work for the 33.5-mile Kal-Haven Trail that runs between 10th Street in Kalamazoo and South Haven and the 14-mile Van Buren Trail between Hartford and South Haven.

But the elimination of the daily fee to use the trail system has its manager worried. If the money runs out, Jeff Mitchell said, the trails may close.

Excerpt:

“I’m in the process of working on my budget, trying to see how I can squeeze a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of work out of $75,000,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell, with his eye on future needs, had requested state funding of $300,000 for both trails.
