Interim director chosen for Kalamazoo Community Foundation

Kalamazoo Community Foundation has named an interim President and CEO to step in when current leader Juan Olivarez leaves Aug. 1 to become President of Aquinas College.

Donald J. Vander Kooy the retired Executive Director of Family & Children Services will serve as the Community Foundation conducts a national search for Olivarez’ replacement.

Vander Kooy currently serves on the board of directors for the foundation.

Vander Kooy is the “perfect fit” for the interim post, says Barbara James, chairperson of the Community Foundation’s board of trustees. “His philosophy, style, experience and knowledge of the Community Foundation’s work will make the transition very smooth,” she says.

Kittleman & Associates has been retained to conduct a national search for Olivarez’ replacement. The Chicago-based firm was used in the search for Olivarez, who joined the Community Foundation in 2008.

Vander Kooy, a certified social worker (ACSW), says he will not be a candidate for the permanent job.

Olivarez, who will be with the Community Foundation through the end of July, says there will be “virtually no learning curve” for Vander Kooy as he steps into the interim position.

James says the foundation looks forward to building on all it has accomplished under Olivarez’ leadership, and to the opportunities that lie ahead for the Community Foundation and greater Kalamazoo community.

Founded in 1925, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation enhances the quality of life for those in the greater Kalamazoo area through community leadership and the stewardship of permanently endowed funds.
