Harbor Habitat experiments with a home remodel job
Harbor Habitat for Humanity in Benton Harbor is headed in a new direction by reconnecting with what’s old, reports the Herald-Palladium. And by old they mean old houses.
The Benton Harbor-area chapter, founded in 1995, is building its 106th new home, with a goal to build 47 more homes in the next five years, says Executive Director Erin Hudson. But in July Harbor Habitat started its first renovation project. Rehabs are a bit more expensive so the project is an experiment to see how if it can be done cost effectively.

Renovations can be great for a neighborhood — Harbor Habitat took a building covered in graffiti and is turning it into a family home, Hudson said. “It’s infectious. It makes everybody get excited about what’s going on” and can spark other neighborhood improvements, Hudson said.
