Improv theater group finds a new home

If you go looking for Crawlspace Eviction in its old space when the new season opens Friday, Oct. 15, and Saturday, Oct. 16, you’re going to miss the show.

The improv troupe that has spent the past seven years in the theater space at 246 North Kalamazoo Mall has uprooted itself and moved up the mall and around the corner.

Crawlspace Eviction and its sister company T&A will perform much of the upcoming season at Farmers Alley Theatre, 221 Farmer’s Alley.

“We made this decision, in part, to allow the remaining arts groups in Studio 246 to thrive with greater scheduling liberties and more focused artistic direction,” says Artistic Director Dann Sytsma.

The Studio 246 schedule was becoming overburdened with performances, while Farmers Alley needed supplemental programming between its productions. The move helps balance schedules at both theaters.

Kinetic Affect and Fancy Pants, the current tenants at Studio 246, both have busy performance schedule that were keeping the space occupied.

There were other incentives for Crawlspace Productions to relocate.

“With the move to Farmers Alley, we will be able to offer our patrons alcoholic beverages, air conditioning, credit card service and closer proximity to local hot spots,” Sytsma says.

Meanwhile both Fancy Pants and Kinetic Affect are gearing up for their season openers as well. Fancy Pants is set to stage “Cannibal the Musical” Friday Oct. 22. (But more on that next week.)

FAT Bottoms Up, which may or may not have anything to do with what takes place on stage over the weekend, is the theme for the Crawlspace Production that gets under way at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for students.
