Cool People program returns to Battle Creek
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports a 1980s youth-focused organization mentored some ambitious kids who as adults now want to see the program flourish with a new generation of leaders.
Cool People Community Savers began in 1984 as an elementary-age, after-school program. Until 1998, it gave young people in the Battle Creek area a sense of belonging, treated the kids like family and motivated them to become good-hearted adults. Some of the founding members — Keith Matthews and Leonard Horton, among others — have reunited with some of the former Cool People kids, who say Battle Creek young people need a program like Cool People: The Next Generation.
Excerpt: “We’re bridging the gaps that our youth want and need,” Matthews said. “Our kids need structure and accountability in their life. And some parents can’t do it by themselves any more.”
The Next Generation is just beginning to form, and soon leaders will go through a 4-week training program with a focus on mentoring from a spiritual perspective.
