Borgess certification may draw new patients

People who need advanced care for heart failure or strokes or for hip and knee replacements now have assurance that care is available at Borgess Medical Center.

Borgess is the first hospital in Michigan and one of 13 in the United States to be certified by the Joint Commission. 

Hospitals apply for certification and the Joint Commission sends surveyors to conduct extensive onsite surveys. The surveyors looked at how Borgess Medical Center provides for patients of stroke, heat failure, hip replacements and knee replacement before granting certification.

The certification means patients know they are receiving some of the best care available for their condition. To receive the certification Borgess met comprehensive criteria with regard to specific advanced resources, staff skills and care protocols.

The Borgess Heart Failure Program helps enhance patients’ quality of life by teaching them to manage their disease while remaining active and enjoying independence at home. The program is part of the Borgess Heart Institute, one of the largest providers of cardiac care in the Midwest. 

The Borgess Stroke Center provides advanced, complete care for stroke. The Center’s comprehensive treatment for stroke includes continuum of care that spans from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation. It also features the the only neuro intensive care unit in Southwest Michigan.

Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. 

The certification, which is reported on the Joint Commission website is expected to encourage people across the region and beyond to consider care at Borgess Medical Center. The Joint Comission website is known as an extremely credible source of information and an excellent place for people to reliably find facilities that will best meet their needs.
