Amateur artist’s bowling alley shows his true colors
Richard Hensley is a fan of barn quilts, patterns painted on barns to resemble hanging quilts.
So he painted one, a “Northern Star”, on his bowling alley, Lariat Lanes in Bangor.
Hensley and his wife, Susan, are fans of Barn Quilts Trails and they wanted to be part of it. The tours began in 2001 to honor quilting and farming.
Excerpt:
Carloads of sightseers following roads to see colorful painted quilt squares on barns. The tour reaches 900 barns in 16 states, mostly in the Midwest. The barn quilts have become a way to get tourists off beaten paths to stop at farms and shops.
“I thought ‘Why not here in Southwest Michigan?'” said Hensley, who has owned Lariat for 29 years.
