Borgess bids out $26.9 million ambulatory care facility

A new ambulatory care facility owned by Borgess Health is going up in Battle Creek and here are the numbers: $26.9 million project, 2 stories, 65,000 square feet and 500 full-time and temporary construction jobs.

Bids are going out for the construction work on the site at southeast corner of Capital Avenue and Beckley Road. The first step in this project came Dec. 7, 2011, with the acquisition of a 21-acre parcel of land from the City of Battle Creek.

Borgess Health representatives, an architect and a construction manager are now working on many aspects of site development and construction.

“We’ve recently awarded excavating, asphalt and concrete contracts to area businesses,” says Paul Spaude, President and CEO of Borgess Health. “These contracts are worth about $1.3 million and many other contracts will follow.”

The facility is slated for completion in early 2014, Spaude says.

Jim Hettinger, former leader of the economic development agency Battle Creek Unlimited and a current member of the Borgess Health Board of Trustees says the project is part of a long tradition among Calhoun County residents of seeking and receiving services from Borgess Health.

In 2010, almost 1,900 Battle Creek-area residents were admitted to Borgess Medical Center. This is nearly twice the number of any other medical provider outside of Calhoun County, Hettinger says.

“The new facility will strengthen and continue the Battle Creek-Borgess Health heritage of care and choice,” Hettinger says.
