Construction is underway on at $15 million health care clinic for underserved people on Kalamazoo’s south side.

The 50,000-square-foot health care clinic on Alcott Street, west of Portage Street in the Edison neighborhood is expected to be completed in March 2017.

Denise Crawford, President and CEO of Family Health Center, says the Alcott clinic will meet a crucial health care need in the community.

“Across our seven locations, we serve 36,400 patients with 105,000 health care visits a year,” Crawford says. “Yet many patients in low-income neighborhoods still struggle to get access to a quality health care clinic. Our mission is to serve those patients with the best care possible.”

Through outreach programs the new Alcott clinic is expected to be serving an additional 30,000 patients by its third year of operation, says Crawford.

Further, it will be a place people can receive multiple services through a collaboration with Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department and Kalamazoo Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Services will include family practice, pediatrics, dental, pharmacy, health care education, behavioral health, case management, community health education, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

“By creating this new health campus, we’ll provide greater capacity to serve new patients, greater ease of access for those who struggle with socio-economic challenges,” says Crawford.

CSM Group serves as construction manager and Eckert Wordell is the architect for the project.
