Charles and Lynn Kohnen had the winning bid of $16,500 for a house at 504 Days Ave. in Buchanan, reports the Herald-Palladium. They found the home, with an assessed value of $65,000 at the Berrien County tax-foreclosure auction.

The couple said they once expected they would never be homeowners. But a recent program by Edegewater Bank turned that around.

Excerpt:

The auction attracted people ranging from would-be homestead buyers to investors, landlords and the curious.

Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski said the sale, first of two to be held this year, had 120 bidders, about an average number. The auction offered 180 pieces of property, including houses, commercial buildings, lots and other property. Fifty-one parcels were sold.
