What's happening: National Geographic Traveler (UK) has named Copper Harbor among the top eight spots for fall foliage beyond New England in a recent roundup. Copper Harbor was ranked number six, behind communities in New York, West Virginia and Colorado.
Magazine description: Copper Harbor is "located near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, where the autumnal transformation of deciduous and coniferous trees is spectacular. Vivid shades of scarlet, amber and gold appear between mid-September and mid-October. Drive along Keweenaw Peninsula’s lakeshore M-26 highway with a detour up to Brockway Mountain for one of the best-loved panoramas in the Upper Peninsula."
What they're saying: “This recognition is great for the region,” said Brad Barnett, executive director of Visit Keweenaw. “It highlights just how special the Keweenaw is, not only for its breathtaking scenery but for the outdoor adventures and natural beauty that bring people here year-round."
Fall awards: Copper Harbor is the latest among several U.P. destinations receiving recognition from major publications. The Vault Hotel in Houghton was recently recognized as a Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Award winner. The boutique hotel in downtown Houghton was ranked 14 in Best Hotels in the Midwest.
