The U.P.'s Island Resort & Casino plans expansion

What's happening: The Island Resort & Casino in Harris, one of the largest multi-use entertainment and convention centers in the Upper Peninsula, has announced a new $19 million investment to grow the destination. Spanning two years, the project will see a large expansion in golfing, including a new nine-hole course and pro shop. Convention space will also see an upgrade, growing by more than 16,900 square feet and a new grand ballroom.

How much growth is needed: Filling both the needs of destination tourism and cultural and venue issues for locals, the Island Resort & Casino expansion will be able to handle new challenges for the area. From a golfing perspective, Sweetgrass and Sage Run already host professional, collegiate and high school competitions, and the new Cedar nine-hole course will add more par 3 and 4 options for a different golfing experience. Designed by the same architect of the existing championship courses, Cedar Course will use many of the natural landscapes available in the Harris area. From a convention center venue, the increase in audio and visual capabilities, expansion of outdoor courtyards and event bars, while adding more capacity to the kitchens, will allow for much larger expos and events for the area.

What they're saying: “The new facility is designed to better accommodate larger events, including business conventions,” says Tony Mancilla, general manager for Island Resort & Casino. “By offering expanded meeting space conveniently located between Lower Michigan and Northern Wisconsin, we will meet the increased demand from regional groups. Many of these groups are looking to have multiple day events during the week. We are in the unique position to also provide hotel accommodations sufficient for these large conventions.”

What's next: With the designs approved, the Island Resort & Casino will begin installing the upgrades as soon as possible. Booking for golf and event space are still available for current accommodations, which is available through the Island Resort and Casino office at 906-466-2941.
