Explore winter beauty and traditions past at Dow Gardens

It is almost Christmas. That in itself is enough to bring a smile to the face of many this month. For those in search of something special to do individually or as a family,  Dow Gardens is the place to be.

The 110-acre Dow Gardens were originally established in 1899, as the home of Herbert and Grace Dow. During the Christmas holiday season, Dow Gardens seems to take on a personality of its own as it draws people from all across the state to its attractions.

“Winter at Dow Gardens offers more than just a walk through the snow-covered landscapes,” says Carolynn Paten, Director of Programming and Guest Services.

“We provide a variety of seasonal programs and events, allowing families to embrace the beauty of nature even in the colder months. Whether it's a winter nature walk or an educational experience, there's something for everyone to enjoy.”
Dow Gardens is a perfect place to get out from under the covers and stretch your legs this winter. One of the main attractions at the Dow Gardens this month is the Christmas Walk. Patrons will be able to enjoy the gently lit pathways while listening to carolers for free admission.

The walk will continue Dec. 12-14 from 5 to 8 p.m. Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee of Saginaw will be on hand with warm beverages available for purchase outside of the Dow Gardens Visitor Center.

“For forty years, the Dow Gardens Christmas Walk is our gift to the community,” Paten says. It’s a beloved tradition where families can experience the magic of the holidays in a festive, illuminated setting, free of charge.

“We are proud to offer this special celebration each year as a way to bring warmth and joy to our guests during the winter season.”

Dow GardensThe Pines is a National Historic Landmark.Another main attraction this month is the Christmas at the Pines event where guests will be able to tour the home of the Dow family and see how they experienced Christmas.

This event will be held Dec. 4-20 between 11 a.m. and 1:30 pm on Wednesdays through Fridays.

On Dec. 21, the tour will be held from 10 a.m. through noon and also from 2 to 4 pm. Admission for adults is $8 and admission for children and other students (with school identification) is $5.

This Christmas season won’t be the only attraction at the Dow Gardens. As the New Year approaches, so does a full schedule of programming for 2025.

“We’re also excited to invite our guests back for the annual Butterflies in Bloom event, taking place from March 7 to April 20, 2025,” Paten says. “It’s a perfect way to welcome spring, as vibrant butterflies flutter through our conservatory, offering a unique and immersive experience for all ages.”
