Fun Earth Day activities in Mt. Pleasant

This upcoming Saturday, April 22 is Earth Day. As people around the world gather to celebrate the planet and Mother Nature, Mt. Pleasant and Isabella County communities are gearing up for Earth Day celebrations throughout the area. Below is a list of public events for those looking to get out and get involved this Earth Day.

CMU’s Earth Week Walking Tour
Central Michigan University is hosting various events throughout Earth Week to celebrate. On Wednesday, April 19, CMU hosts an Earth Week Walking Tour from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. The tour will take place across campus and will focus on CMU’s on-going efforts towards sustainability. Participants are asked to meet on the lawn in front of the Bovee University Center. For more information in this event click here or contact Central Sustainability at sustainability@cmich.edu.

Chippewa Watershed Conservancy’s Earth Day Volunteer Kickoff
The Chippewa Watershed Conservancy of Central Michigan is hosting an Earth Day Volunteer Kickoff at Sylvan Solace Preserve on Saturday, April 22. Participants can join executive director, Mike LeValley, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a tour of Sylvan Solace Preserve that will showcase past volunteer projects and discuss how to get involved as a volunteer for 2023. After the tour, participants are welcome to stay for a volunteer trail building session. The Sylvan Solace Preserve is located at 4561 W. Pickard Rd. in Mt. Pleasant.

Central Sustainability and Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College’s Soup & Substance Event
On April 20, 2023 Central Sustainability along with the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College will be hosting a Soup & Substance event from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in CMU’s Powers Ballroom. Members of the tribal college will be discussing environmental topics pertaining to their culture over traditional Anishinaabek soup and other refreshments. Those wishing to attend are requested to RSVP via the website.

CMU’s Earth Day Trash-a-Thon
To round out Earth Week, CMU will be hosting their annual student Earth Day Trash-a-Thon. Student-led groups will have the opportunity to raise donations while cleaning up the Mt. Pleasant community. The top three groups who collect the most waste will receive cash and/or gift card prizes. The event will take place on April 22, 2023 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.. Student groups wishing to participate will need to be registered by April 21. To register a group visit the Earth Day Trash-a-Thon website.

Isabella County Recycling Center’s Drop-off Recycling
The Isabella County Recycling Center will be open for drop-off recycling on Earth Day from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information on drop-off recycling and to find out about recyclable materials, visit the Isabella County website.

Visit Parks, Trails and Sanctuaries 
Can’t make any of the above events? There’s plenty of other ways to get out and stay involved this Earth Day. Connect with nature by visiting one of Isabella County’s parks, the McDonald Wildlife sanctuary, or bike the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail.
